  1. RULES FOR THE USERS OF THE BUTTERFLY NETWORK
  2.  
  3. ALIASES 
  4.  
  5. All users shall use their true names. "Handles" and aliases are 
  6. not permitted at any time. 
  7.  
  8. CLUTTER 
  9.  
  10. All users should strive to avoid lengthy quotation from other 
  11. messages, or use of elaborate art and signatures. 
  12.  
  13.  
  14. FLAMES 
  15. Users must refrain from "flaming." Flaming consists of name 
  16. calling, slurs, ad hominem responses to arguments or other rude 
  17. and insulting behavior. Excoriating rhetoric is not permitted. 
  18. Profanity is also prohibited. In the event that another user 
  19. "flames" users must refrain from replying to or censuring the 
  20. party in further messages, since this results in diverting the 
  21. flow of the conferences from useful traffic to flames.

  23. In the event that a user is concerned about other's behavior, or 
  24. feels that message traffic is a violation of this rule may direct 
  25. brief, routed to moderator (non-public) messages to the moderator 
  26. of the conference.

  29. OFFICIAL LANGUAGE 
  30. English is the official language of the Butterfly  network.
  31. Message  traffic should be in English.

  33.  
  34. LIMITATIONS ON USE OF NETWORK FOR PROFIT 
  35.  
  36. Other than the limited exceptions stated below traffic for 
  37. pecuniary gain is prohibited. Non-commercial users may discuss 
  38. sales of items that they own. Businesses may no more than once
  39. every week  place a brief description of their services in
  40. appropriate areas.  In conferences devoted to particular products
  41. this rule does not  apply.

  44. "PRIVATE" MESSAGING 
  45.  
  46. The Butterfly  network does not have facilities for
  47. "private" messages.  Those requiring secure and private
  48. communications should use  alternative means to deliver such
  49. communications. Messages in the  administration conference are
  50. routed so that only member sysops  and other officials may gain
  51. access. 
  52.  
  53. COPYRIGHT AND RETRANSMISSION OF MESSAGES 
  54.  
  55. The compilation of messages on the Butterfly  network,
  56.                            
  57. including input  by users is Copyrighted by the Butterfly 
  58. network. Other than brief  excerpts, quoting or retransmission of
  59. the message traffic of the  Butterfly  network is
  60. prohibited.  
  61.  
  62.  
  63. BARRING OF USERS 
  64.  
  65. Users may be barred or locked out at the discretion of the 
  66. conference moderators and the network administrators. Individual 
  67. computer bulletin board systems retain the right to decline to 
  68. receive messages traffic from particular individuals in their 
  69. discretion. The facilities of the Butterfly  network may
  70. not be used  for illegal purposes. The Butterfly  network
  71. reserves the right to  temporarily or permanently suspend
  72. operations at any time and for  any reason.

  74. PENALTIES FOR VIOLATIONS 
  75.  
  76. The conference moderator is an official appointed by the Butterfly
  77.   network who generally "polices" the conference. The
  78. moderator  will insure that the spirit and letter of any network
  79. regulations  are followed. 
  80.  
  81. Unless a violation is egregious, willful or considered by the 
  82. conference moderator to be an imminent threat to the network, 
  83. first violators will be warned by routed traffic to desist. Upon 
  84. further violations, a user may be placed on probation or 
  85. temporarily or permanently barred from the network, or some areas 
  86. of the network.

  88. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY 
  89.  
  90. The Butterfly  network is a non-profit association of
  91. volunteers. In  consideration of access to the network, all users
  92. waive the right  to make claims of any kind related to the
  93. activities of the  network, and assume the risk of all
  94. transactions which they  undertake herein. IT IS STRONGLY
  95. RECOMMENDED THAT IF MESSAGES ARE  CRITICAL THAT A COMMERCIAL
  96. CARRIER BE USED.

  98. RIGHT TO CHANGE 
  99.  
  100. The Butterfly  network may change regulations at any time
  101. by publishing  notice of the changes in the affected conferences. 
  102.  
  103. RESPONSE TO SUBPOENAS; COURT ORDERS 
  104.  
  105. The Butterfly  network, if directed to do so by subpoena or
  106. other court  order may provide the contents of any messages,
  107. including  "routed" or "encrypted" messages to official authority.
